I have been qualified as a Counsellor for over ten years, but have been working in the field for longer. I started out as a Breastfeeding Counsellor, and then decided that I wanted to expand my knowledge, and so I gained my Honours Degree in Psychology at UWE, Bristol. I had previously gained a BSc Hons in Building Surveying and worked as a Surveyor and Project Manager for the MOD and local authorities.
My early experience was working with pregnant and new mothers, and although I was primarily a Breastfeeding Counsellor, I found that I was spending a lot of my time debriefing new parents about their birth experience and what it meant to them to be new parents, with the changes and challenges that this new journey in life brings you. This made me want to become more involved in working with new families and I progressed on to working with individuals and young people.
I have worked in the NHS at LIFT Psychology Swindon as a Psychology Practitioner and Volunteered at a non-profit counselling service for a few years. I decided that I wanted to gain a further qualification; a Professional Doctorate (DCounsPsych) in Counselling Psychology, and I am currently in my final year of this course, which is why my professional title is now Counselling Psychologist in Training.
I am a working parent so I can empathise as to the struggles involved in having a family, especially as I run my own private practice. I also had a turbulent time as a teenager, and because of this, I find it very easy to develop a rapport with young people; I understand the difficulties that growth and change in your teens brings.
I am fully qualified and I work with a Supervisor who ensures that all my work is conducted under best practice. My governing body is the British Psychological Society, where I am a registered Graduate Member of the Division of Counselling Psychology and also the British Association for Counselling and Psychology.
The title’s after my name are my qualifications- BSc Hons, as I have a BSc Hons in Psychology; DipHE as I hold a Diploma of Higher Education in Counselling, MBPsS signifies that I am a Member of the British Psychological Society and MBACP Signifies that I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychology.
I am fully insured by Towergate Insurance for my private practice and am continually learning by the process of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to ensure that my skills base is current and up to date.
